Origins of America's name

The name "America," derived from Amerigo Vespucci, was originally applied only to South America. The earliest known use was in 1507, when German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller labeled the new continent "America" on his map, specifically referring to what is now South America. The name gradually spread and, within a few decades, was used for both South and North America as European geographic understanding improved.
